Marcelle Lacub, French jurist and researcher also known for her theories about the sexual revolution, asks: "Do we say that the slaves in America were farmers because they were picking cotton? No. Therefore, a woman forced to prostitute herself is a slave of prostitution."
We too have to be aware of the fact that tens of thousands of women are sold on the prostitution market in Europe every year.1) From Riga and Amsterdam to Prague - it's Europe's turn to act. Right because Europe has always struggled very hard for the equality between men and women, the destiny of the European young women and girls can't be a matter of indifference to the European Union. As long as men and women buy, sell and abuse their own kind, equality can't be reached.
The neo-abolitionism, the idea to reduce demand, coming from the Scandinavian feminist movement of the 1970s should be applied globally in future because it had been proofed that other policies, based on the opposite way of thinking, do not lead to reduced human trafficking of men and women. That means: instead of criminalizing the victims, the clients and procurers should be judicially and financially punished.
In order to do so it would be reasonable to apply the law "Women's peace", which already has proven its efficiency in Sweden, also to the male victims of prostitution and to the European Union as a whole. Therefore, the EU needs the support of all its institutions. And as there is no text of law so far, Germany could be the key to success or failure of this attempt to change things. Because if such a big, reglementarist country like Germany modified its legislation following the Swedish example, all the neighbouring states would be influenced by this decision and that would lead to an acceleration of the development. Europe could carry a message of respect to its member states as well as to the rest of the world. Like in Greek mythology, princess Europe, abducted by Zeus in form of a bull, could now, at the beginning of the 21st century, prove that she is able to face big challenges and that she can put an end to the dirty tricks of the "Zeus of today".
Gender equality and the fundamental rights are part of our European dream. However, this dream can only become true if we pass the law "Women's and Men's peace" and if it is applied all over our European continent.
