A European Day to celebrate the languages diversityBy Rémi Praud
As every year, last Sunday September, 26th was the celebration of the European Day of Languages, created in 2001 by the Council of Europe, and thus emphasizes the European languages diversity. The aim of this Day is to promote the linguistic heritage and encourage lifelong language learning. The list of events is quite long: conferences, radio program, quiz, cinema festival or storytelling etc.
This year the European Commission has decided to put the emphasize on business, notably the SMEs, and the influence of language skills on their activities. It is indeed a forgotten aspect of the global strategy to improve competitiveness and efficiency of the European economy, which is part of the EU 2020 strategy, aiming at replacing the Lisbon Strategy. Maybe less seriously, the European Commission organizes an on-line language quiz and a contest entitled “My Favourite Foreign Language Story” to highlight how languages can open doors in private and professional life. The authors of the best stories will be invited to Brussels for an award ceremony around Europe Day in May 2011. Generation 112 supports all the initiatives which improve the knowledge and recognition of the languages, and wishes to encourage the European Commission to enhance its multilingualism policy, very often put aside but so essential for tomorrow’s Europe.
