Children’s rights are human rights

Today, the United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) celebrates its 20th anniversary.

By Adrian Pantev

Children’s rights are human rights
The UN General Assembly adopted the Convention and opened it for signature on 20 November 1989. It came into force on 2 September 1990. 193 countries have ratified it including all the members of the UN, except for Somalia and the US (see Children’s rights to celebrate 20th anniversary, 6 November 2009). Two optional protocols were adopted on 25 May 2000 concerning the involvement of children in military conflicts as well as the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography. To consult the CRC please visit the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights’ website.

Organizations, governments and ordinary people all over the world are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. To see whats going on where you live check out Unicef’s CRC event calendar .
